Gary St. Onge hated his roof.
It wasn’t the shingles–they were in fine condition. But every summer without fail, he found the heat buildup under the eaves unbearable. Thermometers placed in the attic read upwards of 120 degrees, and his air conditioning system couldn’t keep up. Even on nights when the outside temperature dropped into the 50s, Gary would wake to the air conditioner running as the attic heat dispersed through the house.

Beyond the discomfort, he also discovered moisture on the attic insulation and mold growth from water intrusion. There was no way for the moisture to dry.
“Whoever put the roof on initially didn’t vent the peak properly, so the attic didn’t have the proper airflow,” he explained. “The soffits were fine, but we wanted to make sure air could flow out the peak.”
Gary also found that his older home had sections added throughout the years, and each new addition was shingled just a bit differently.
It was time for a new roof and a new, coherent style.
Goldspire Delivers the Solution
Gary knew several Amish craftsmen and construction workers from other projects on his property, and one of them introduced him to Willie Swarey, owner of Goldspire Roofing. Thanks to the word-of-mouth recommendation and Gary’s positive experience with Amish builders, he decided that Goldspire would be his roofing contractor.
He also decided on a standing seam metal roof. The longevity of metal was appealing, and he appreciated the sleek aesthetic of standing seam.
Gary’s new metal roof went on in December, with Willie and the Goldspire crew wrapping up the project in just four days.

While his big concern was summer heat, Gary says the metal panels have been a big improvement in winter weather, too. Snow slides right off, and ice dams–which formed previously because the attic held on to so much heat–are a thing of the past.
“The roofing crew brings a machine, and they roll a long metal panel right on site,” Gary explained. “The panel runs from the peak of the roof the whole way down, so there’s no place where we could have ice or snow back up into the house.”
Gary says that the Goldspire crew did an excellent job navigating around the skylights and angles of an older home that’s had multiple additions, even adding special flashing to address the roof’s pitch in specific areas. He’s been thrilled with the process from start to finish.

“The experience was very pleasant, and they did a very nice job.”
